Creative Translating
His motherhand is American Sign Language. He dissects the language to adapt both Shakespeare and contemporary works, elevating creativity in the process. From experimental downtown theaters to Broadway, he directs the translation and creates artistic signs in close collaboration with the director and actors.
Andrew served as Director of the Artistic Sign Language (DASL) for Levi Holloway’s Grey House on Broadway, directed by Joe Mantello. He earned the Obie’s Michael Feingold Award (2023) for his DASL work on the critically acclaimed Dark Disabled Stories (Bushwick Starr & The Public Theater) by Ryan J. Haddad. He has also contributed to developmental projects with Prospect Musicals, IRT Theatre, Gallaudet Theatre, Illinois Theatre, and more.
For classic works, Andrew was co-commissioned by The Public Theater to fully translate Titus Andronicus and co-directed the artistic sign language for its development with The Apothetae. He has worked with Fiasco Theatre and Deaf West on developmental projects of Hamlet and As You Like It. His favorite DASL credit included Deaf West’s Oedipus at Getty Villa, directed by Jenny Koons.
